If you haven't seen The Wolf of Wall Street, you need to. It's a great movie and while it's basically full of deceptive and lewd acts, it shows you what a broker does (or possibly used to do!). Brokers find people to buy shares and connect buyers and sellers. They ‘broker a deal’. This is all electronic now. Brokers effectively plug into the ASX systems and communicate with other people with other shares. If you are buying or selling a small or micro-cap company, your order might not be filled instantly, as it would be with large ‘blue chip’ companies.

You can sign up to as many brokers as you wish, although for ease of paperwork and drama in your life, it's often cleaner to have one broker. Most brokers now also allow you to purchase shares on exchanges in the USA.
